WE TEACH KIDS

Earlier this May, Miru, a member of WE SL and a training lawyer, traveled to Nuwara Eliya to visit the children of Dotalla tea estates.

 

Dotalla tea estate is a small, privately run estate in the Nuwara Eliya district. Motivated by the parents' commitment to providing their children with an education, an outbuilding was constructed to create a space for learning and growth.

 

Here, around 15 children, aged 4-7, gather daily to receive classes from their teacher. Once they roughly reach the age of 10, they begin their daily 5km walk to their secondary school.

 

Upon arrival, Miru was warmly welcomed by the families of the estate, who greeted her with lit lamps and excitement. She delivered essential supplies to the children in support of WE SL’s new project, WE Teach Kids.

 

The children were eager to have a lesson right away. Miru shared:

 

“They all had their own dreams, big dreams, and were certain about what they wanted to do. Some wanted to be doctors, lawyers, police officers, and some teachers. Although they were in an unfortunate situation, they were so hopeful, and it was heartwarming to hear about their aspirations. Now that they have shared their wishes with us, it’s our duty to help them achieve their goals.”

 

Starting in August these 15 children of Dotalla Estate will begin English lessons, 3 days per week. This is hosted by WE SL and taught by over 15 dedicated and passionate volunteers.

 

We would like to extend a special thanks to Miru for taking the time to visit the families, and to Selvie, a volunteer and key coordinator of all initiatives at the tea estates.
